Maryam Lemu – Advice for before and after marriage

Many of us go into marriage blindly. The homework we do before the marriage can prevent some serious problems afterwards. Know yourself. Be very self aware. Know your strengths and areas for improvement and work on them. Also be highly principled, have strong values and don’t compromise or settle for someone who doesn’t share those values. Especially when it comes to faith, growth and human dignity. Go into marriage with your eyes wide open. Have realistic expectations. Don’t make your wish list so heavy that the person your are seeking doesn’t exist. Don’t put your life on hold either waiting for Mr. or Miss Right to show up.

Ask many who are married about their best practices and pitfalls to avoid, then select the ones you feel will work for you. It’s very important that you know your rights in marriage but also your obligations. You and your spouse-to-be need to commit to fulfilling each other’s rights and obligations. Allah will ask us about this and we will be held accountable for it. May Allah continue to bless our unions and grant us contentment, peace and tranquility in our homes.
